Danish summer is a season of abundant daylight. The days are long, and the weather is pleasantly warm - ideal for cycling, picnicking, and enjoying the beauty of nature. Moreover, the cities are vibrant. There are many opportunities to visit outdoor markets, open-air cafes and to attend festivals.
A recurring event on 23 June each year is celebrating Sankt Hans Aften (Saint John's Eve), which is an ancient midsummer festival. Danes usually celebrate Sankt Hans with a dinner at home with family and friends followed by a stroll to a community bonfire. You have the opportunity to attend Sankt Hans events all over Denmark – see the locations for Aalborg and Copenhagen here and kindly ask your local colleagues for the exact locations in Esbjerg.
Furthermore, International Staff Unit (ISU) would like to invite you to join us for our last two upcoming social meet-ups in June before we take a summer break. We plan to bring Danish traditional cakes on 13 June and to host a mini picnic on 27 June , where spouses, partners and family members of AAU staff and PhD students are more than welcome to join as well.
On a practical note, we would like to kindly remind you that Wednesday 5 June is the Danish Constitution Day (Grundlovsdag) and as it is an official public holiday, all Aalborg University staff will have a day off from work.
Dating from 1849, the day is a major celebration of the Danish democracy and we strongly recommend that you use the opportunity to join one of the many celebrations around the country, or ask your Danish colleagues about the history and development of the Danish constitution. You may be surprised to learn some interesting facts – e.g. would you like to know when women in Denmark obtained the right to vote? Was it already in 1849 or was it years later?
Last but not least, if you are curious about the additional supplement, which you have received in the May salary payout - this is a special holiday allowance (a holiday supplement), which is paid to employees, who are employed in the public sector.
We kindly encourage you to visit the new FAQ section on our website for more general information about living in Denmark and working at Aalborg University.
Our best wishes for a wonderful summer;
we look forward to seeing you at our events 😊
